Frozen Passion Fruit for Poland and Eastern Europe: Sourcing Direct from Vietnam

Buyers in Poland and the rest of Central and Eastern Europe can source frozen passion fruit direct from Vietnam instead of through traders in Rotterdam or Hamburg. Five terms decide whether it works: the format, Brix and acidity, a residue report for each lot against EU limits, a EUR.1 for zero duty, and a reefer held at -18 °C or colder all the way to the port.

This guide is written for juice bottlers, dairy and dessert plants, ice cream makers and importers in Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Baltic states.

Why is Eastern Europe buying more passion fruit?

Poland leads the region. CBI, the Dutch import promotion centre, estimates that Polish direct imports of passion fruit juice from the five largest supplier countries grew from 659 tonnes in 2021 to 1,082 tonnes in 2025, about 13% a year, while import value rose by roughly 40% to €3.4 million. Poland is now one of the largest direct importers in Europe, alongside the Netherlands, France, Spain, the UK and Italy.

Most of that volume goes into blends. Polish producers pair passion fruit with apple, orange, mango, peach or carrot, and use it in smoothies, children's fruit products, kombucha and chilled premium drinks. Passion fruit gives a strong tropical note even at low dosage, which suits a country that is the EU's largest producer of apple juice concentrate.

Regulation is adding demand. In 2024 the EU amended its fruit juice directive and created reduced-sugar juice categories. Juices with less sugar need ingredients that keep their flavour, and the acidity and aroma of passion fruit do exactly that.

There is also room to grow. The Polish Investment and Trade Agency puts average spending on frozen fruit and vegetables in Eastern Europe at about USD 8.10 per person in 2024, against USD 24 in Western Europe. On supply, CBI names Vietnam as one of the three main sources of passion fruit for Europe, together with Peru and Ecuador.

Which passion fruit format fits your line?

Order the format your process needs, not the one that is easiest to quote. Two frozen formats cover most Eastern European plants:

  • IQF passion fruit pulp with seeds. Free-flowing frozen pulp for yogurt toppings, cheesecakes, ice cream ripples, cakes and cocktails, where the black seeds are part of the look.
  • Seedless passion fruit purée. Sieved pulp for juice blends, nectars, sorbets and dairy drinks, where seeds would block pumps, filters or filling nozzles.

Juice concentrate at around 50 to 55 °Bx is a third option, made by juice processors for bottlers that reconstitute. TbesAgri supplies IQF frozen passion fruit as standard and agrees other forms on request.

What Brix should you put in the contract?

Brix has to match what you make. Under EU rules, a reconstituted juice made from passion fruit concentrate must reach at least 13.5 °Bx. Not-from-concentrate passion fruit juice usually sits at 13 to 15 °Bx, according to CBI.

For pulp and purée, agree how Brix is measured: on thawed product, at 20 °C, with a stated tolerance. Put acidity in the same line, because passion fruit is often dosed for its sourness as much as its sweetness. Then ask for both figures on every certificate of analysis.

How do you make sure residue testing meets EU limits?

Pesticide residues are what EU border and market controls check first on tropical fruit. Maximum residue levels for passion fruit are set under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and apply to frozen fruit just as they do to fresh. Ask your supplier for:

  • A multi-residue screen for each lot from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, reported against current EU limits
  • Farm-level certification such as GLOBALG.A.P., so spray records can be traced back to the grower
  • Confirmation that the supplier checks the EU pesticide database before each season, because limits are revised during the year

Before you sign, it is also worth checking the annexes of Regulation (EU) 2019/1793, which set higher border-check rates for certain products and origins and are reviewed every six months. TbesAgri works under GLOBALG.A.P. and ISO 22000 certification.

What duty and documents apply in the EU?

The EU has completed its tariff cuts under the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and 99% of Vietnamese exports to the EU are now eligible for zero duty. To claim the preference on frozen passion fruit, the shipment needs proof of Vietnamese origin: a EUR.1 certificate, or an origin declaration on the invoice for consignments up to €6,000. Confirm the exact CN code and rate for your product in the EU's Access2Markets tool.

A standard document set for a container of frozen passion fruit:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Bill of lading
  • EUR.1 certificate of origin
  • Certificate of analysis covering Brix, acidity, microbiology and the residue screen
  • Temperature record from loading

Once cleared in any EU port, the goods move to Poland, Czechia or Romania without further duty. More on EU requirements is on our European Union market page.

How does frozen passion fruit ship from Vietnam to Poland?

Until recently, most Vietnamese frozen fruit for Central Europe arrived through Rotterdam or Hamburg and continued by truck or feeder ship. That is changing. COSCO Shipping's AEU7 service, with its first Gdańsk call scheduled for the end of August 2026, links Cai Mep in southern Vietnam directly with Baltic Hub in Gdańsk.

For buyers in Poland, the Baltic states and Czechia, a direct call removes a transshipment and the cold-chain handover that comes with it. Book reefers at -18 °C or colder, and ask for the set point and logger data at loading. Rotterdam and Hamburg remain good options with onward road or rail.

FAQ

Can I import frozen passion fruit from Vietnam into Poland duty-free?

Yes, under the EVFTA, provided the shipment carries valid proof of Vietnamese origin: a EUR.1, or an invoice declaration for consignments up to €6,000. Check the CN code for your exact product in Access2Markets.

Which port works best for Central and Eastern Europe?

Gdańsk now has a direct call from Cai Mep, which suits Poland and the Baltic states. Rotterdam and Hamburg remain options for buyers who prefer road or rail delivery to Czechia, Slovakia or Hungary.

What is the difference between passion fruit pulp and purée?

Pulp keeps the seeds and is used where they are visible, such as toppings and desserts. Purée is sieved and seedless, for drinks, nectars and anything that passes through pumps or nozzles.

When is Vietnamese passion fruit harvested?

Vietnam harvests passion fruit through much of the year. Our mango and passion fruit sourcing calendar shows the peaks and how to plan contracts around them.
